Who Can Apply for an FDW Work Permit?

When applying for an FDW Work Permit, you can do so through the employer, a sponsor, or an authorised employment agent (EA). A sponsor can be:

  • A child or grandchild of the employer
  • A spouse of the child or grandchild of the employer
  • A sibling of the employer

To apply, the employer needs to be at least 21 years old, not bankrupt, and capable of managing an employee. First-time employers will also need to attend an Employer Orientation Programme (EOP).

While you can apply directly through the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) using the eService or an application form, working with an agency like Trinity Pass makes the whole process much easier.

We handle the paperwork, ensure you meet all the requirements, and guide you through every step, saving you time and hassle. Plus, if it’s your first time, we’ll make sure you're fully prepared for the EOP and any other details you might not have considered. Let us take care of everything so you can focus on what matters most.

FDW Work Permit Renewal: When & How to Renew

Renewing your FDW's Work Permit doesn’t have to be complicated. Here's everything you need to know to make the process smooth and simple:

When to Renew the FDW Work Permit

You’ll receive a renewal letter from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) about 8 weeks before the permit expires. If your helper plans to travel, make sure to renew the Work Permit before she leaves Singapore to avoid any last-minute issues.

Who Can Renew the FDW Work Permit

You, as the employer, or an authorised agency like Trinity Pass, can handle the renewal. While you can technically do it yourself, working with us makes the whole process much easier. We’ll take care of everything, ensuring the renewal is done properly and on time.

What You’ll Need

  • Updated passport details: A scanned copy of your helper’s passport, including any amendments.
  • Medical examination: If required, we’ll help you ensure the exam is completed and uploaded.
  • Insurance: Extend or purchase the necessary security bond, medical, and personal accident insurance.
  • Temporary Work Permit delivery: If your helper gets a new card, we’ll make sure the delivery details are sorted out.

Cost & Processing Time

Renewing the FDW Work Permit costs $35, and the process is quick - usually immediate once all the documents are submitted. You can pay using Visa, Mastercard, or PayNow.

Duration of Renewal

Your FDW's Work Permit is generally renewed for two years, though it may be shorter in certain situations, like if your helper is approaching 60 years old or if the insurance isn’t valid for a full two years.

Late Renewals

It’s always best to renew on time to avoid any penalties or fines. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure everything is done before the deadline.

At Trinity Pass, we make FDW Work Permit renewals easy. We’ll handle all the paperwork and make sure everything is in order so you don’t have to stress. Let us do the hard work for you, so you can focus on the things that matter most.

Transferring an FDW Work Permit to a New Employer

If you’re looking to transfer your Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) to a new employer, there are a few steps both the current and new employers need to follow. Here’s a simple breakdown:

For the Current Employer:

  • Medical Check: Make sure your FDW has completed her 6-monthly medical examination.
  • Approve the Transfer: You’ll receive an email when the new employer requests the transfer. Just log in to the FDW eService to approve it.
  • Levy Payments: Keep paying the levy until the new employer issues the Work Permit. Once they do, your levy billing will stop.
  • Work Permit Card: Don’t forget to cut up and dispose of the old Work Permit card once it’s cancelled.
  • Security Bond: The security bond will be discharged a week after the FDW starts with her new employer.

For the New Employer:

  • Medical Check: Double-check that your FDW has had her 6-monthly medical exam and that her Work Permit is valid for more than 30 days.
  • Request the Transfer: Log in to the FDW eService to get the current employer’s consent for the transfer. Once they approve, you can apply for the new Work Permit.
  • Get Ready for the Transfer: Once you receive the in-principle approval (IPA), you’ll need to buy the security bond and insurance. Both you and the FDW will need to sign the Declaration form.
  • Issue the New Work Permit: On the agreed transfer date, issue the new Work Permit and give your FDW a Temporary Work Permit so she can start working for you.

Key Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Timing: Make sure to issue the new Work Permit within 21 days or before the current one expires to avoid fines.
  • Delays: If needed, you can extend the transfer date with both the current and new employer’s agreement through the FDW eService.

At Trinity Pass, we’re here to make the entire process as smooth as possible. We handle all the paperwork and help guide you through each step, so you can focus on settling your new helper in without the stress. Let us do the heavy lifting for you!

Cancelling an FDW Work Permit: What You Need to Know

When it's time to cancel your FDW work permit in Singapore, the process can be straightforward if you follow a few simple steps.

Start by giving your helper a reasonable notice period - usually at least one month - and agree on their final day of work. Be sure to settle any outstanding payments like salary or security bond, and check that your helper's passport is still valid. Then, make travel arrangements, including booking their flight and any transport for layovers.

You'll also need to apply for tax clearance from IRAS at least one month before the final day. Once that's done, you can head to the FDW eService to cancel the work permit and select the reason for doing so. Don’t forget to cut up the work permit card and discard it to prevent misuse.

If you'd like us to handle everything for you, Trinity Pass can take care of the entire process - making it that much easier. Once the cancellation is complete and all conditions are met, the security bond will be discharged once your helper returns home.

Maid Levy & Employer Responsibilities

As an employer of a migrant domestic worker (MDW) in Singapore, there are a few key responsibilities you’ll need to keep on top of:

  • Work Permit Cancellation: Agree with your maid on her final working day before you cancel her work permit.
  • Housing: Make sure your maid has proper accommodation that meets legal standards, pay rent on time, and arrange new housing if needed.
  • Maintenance: Ensure she has enough food, access to medical care, and comfortable living conditions.

In addition to these, there are a couple of other things you may need to manage:

  • Levies and Waivers: You can apply for a levy waiver when your maid returns to Singapore after taking overseas leave.
  • Placement Fees: These fees are typically deducted from your maid’s salary during the first few months of her employment.

You might also be eligible for a levy concession if you have someone in your household who qualifies, such as:

  • A child under 16 years old
  • An elderly person aged 67 or older
  • A person with a disability who needs help with daily tasks like dressing, eating, or moving around

Just remember, for the levy concession, the disability needs to be certified by a Singapore-registered doctor. And even if you apply for a levy waiver when your maid returns, you’ll still be charged the levy during her overseas leave.

For a deeper dive into these responsibilities and how to manage them smoothly, take a look at our full guide on maid levy and employer responsibilities.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in FDW Applications

Hiring a foreign domestic worker (FDW) in Singapore can be a bit tricky, but with a little attention to detail, you can avoid some common mistakes. Here’s a quick rundown of what to watch out for:

Missing Required Documents

One of the easiest ways to slow down your application is by missing key documents. Missing paperwork can cause delays or even result in your application being rejected. Here’s a checklist to help you stay on track:

  • FDW’s passport and medical certificates
  • Your ID and proof of address
  • The employment contract and security bond documents
  • Proof that your FDW will have proper housing and food

Take a moment to double-check everything before you submit -it’ll save you time in the long run.

Not Meeting MOM’s Financial Requirements

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has certain financial criteria that you must meet to hire an FDW. If you don’t meet these, your application could be rejected. Before you apply:

  • Check that your income meets MOM's minimum requirements.
  • Gather documents like your payslips and bank statements to show your financial standing.

It’s a good idea to review these requirements early, so you don’t run into any surprises later.

Delayed Levy Payments Leading to Permit Cancellation

If you don’t stay on top of your levy payments, you risk having your FDW’s work permit cancelled. To avoid this:

  • Make sure your levy payments are always on time.
  • Set up reminders or schedule automatic payments to keep things simple.
  • If you do miss a payment, reach out to MOM as soon as possible to resolve it.

By staying organised and being mindful of these points, you can avoid some of the most common mistakes in the application process. If you ever feel uncertain or overwhelmed, working with an agency like Trinity Pass can make everything much easier. We’re here to help you every step of the way
